Illinois kicks off $300 million fundraiser to build football performance center

The University of Illinois continues to take steps to upgrade their athletic program.

Director of Athletics, Josh Whitman, said the university is kicking off a $300 million fundraising campaign.

That includes a $200 million program for capital projects, including the new Football Performance Center which is scheduled to open in 2019.

Coaches said the university needs the support in order for the athletic program to take steps forward.

"Recruiting is a lot about facilities and what is in front of athletes when they come on campus,” University of Illinois Head Football Coach Lovie Smith said. “Once we get our new facility completed, it's going to be a showcase that has to help the overall plan on how we bring our football program back. Very excited, excited for our athletes to come and train in a facility like this."
