DANVILLE, Ill. (WCCU) — A pregnant woman has been recovering in the hospital after being shot several times on Tuesday, but her baby who was due in four weeks did not survive the attack.
Lydia Davis, a 21-year-old mother from Danville, is now in stable condition since being shot.
Now, Davis' mother is speaking about the family tragedy.
"I didn't know what to do. I was numb. I didn't know, it was scary, and I thought I was going to lose my daughter," said Rachelle Garner, Davis' mother.
Garner said she came downstairs on Tuesday night after hearing gunshots towards the home.
She then found her eight-months-pregnant daughter covered in blood.
"I had just went and laid down, and she had just brought her daughter to lay in bed with me. And if she had been in there with her [mom], she would have been shot too," said Garner, noting how Davis' other daughter was not in the room during the shooting.
Davis had been shot several times, while the unborn child who she planned to be named Junior, was killed.
Outside of her home, there are over a dozen bullet holes in the windows and walls.
"She is a loving mother, a great daughter. She loves everybody and ain't got a hateful bone in her body," said Garner.
Garner and her family are planning to honor the loss of their unborn grandchild and support their daughter.
"I wish it wasn't even her. I wish it could have been me and my grandbaby would still be here," said Garner.
Garner said she's concerned not only their status of her daughter, but over the safety in Danville.
"Danville is not a safe place to be if anybody has got families and want to keep their families leave. We're not safe here no more, and I grew up here since I was born and it has just gotten so bad," said Garner.
