Underpasses groundbreaking ceremony in Springfield

Local and state officials celebrate the groundbreaking for the underpasses at Ash St. and Laurel St. in Springfield on Saturday.

The groundbreaking is the next component of the $315 million Springfield Rail Improvements Project.

Senator Dick Durbin, Representatives Rodney Davis and Darin Lahood along with Mayor Jim Langfelder were at the ceremony on Saturday.

Officials say the project will be an economic driver for the area among other benefits.

"We're going to have few, and few grade crossings,” Illinois Senator Durbin said.

“We are going to have more underpasses and overpasses. There'll be few train whistles and horns going off in the middle of the night. And it's going to be safer for people so it's a good win, win situation."

The underpasses will replace the highway-rail grade crossings and reduce train delays and train versus vehicle crashes in the city.

Ash St.'s bridge will be built first and is expected to be complete in June 2019.
