Transgender student suing a suburban Chicago school district
A transgender student is suing a suburban Chicago school district over access to the girls' locker room.
18-year-old Nova Maday says Palatine High School denied her full access to the girl's locker room during physical education classes.
She filed the lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court last week.
Maday has identified as a female for almost her entire high school career.
She says filing the lawsuit is the only way to force change.
"All I want to be, all I want to do is be like all the other girls in school. I just want to use the locker room and change and go to gym class. And unfortunately the district's made it impossible to do that."
District superintendent Daniel Cates says transgender students who have requested locker room use in line with their gender have been offered such access.
Maday's lawsuit follows a previous federal complaint by another transgender student against the district.
