UPDATE:
The Sangamon County Coroner says the preliminary cause of death for 3-year-old Johnathon R. McDonough is related to the fire, including carbon monoxide poisoning.

ORIGINAL:
A family is mourning after a toddler was killed in a house fire in Riverton.

Firefighters responded to a call about a structure fire in the 1400 block of North 3rd Street around 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Fire crews tell us the 3-year-old boy, Johnathon R. McDonough, was trapped inside the home. The boy's father attempted to save him, but was unable to.

The father is now in the ICU with severe burns from trying to save his son.

No word yet on the cause of the fire.

Investigators say they're still trying to piece everything together because of the extensive damage.

No other victims were found.
