Substance Abuse Awareness Month Begins With Warning To Teens

October is substance abuse prevention month and local organizations are reminding residents of the dangers that come with abusing substances.

Non for profit group prevention first says among Illinois youth, alcohol is the most abused drug, followed by marijuana and tobacco.

Research shows has dropped over the last few years, but alcohol abuse is still a big problem across the state. As statistics show alcohol abuse among Illinois teens is higher than the national average.

"It can affect their ability to learn and remember.{} It can impact their impulse control and judgment.{} More so than perhaps adults," said Karel Homrig, Prevention First executive director.

Organizers will visit local schools all month long to educate students and parents about the effects and health risks of substance abuse.{}
