SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS)) -- Springfield is seeing its first major snow storm of the season. Sangamon county is under a winter weather warning until Sunday morning.
Emergency personnel are asking people to stay off the roadways this weekend and to only travel if necessary.
Snow started accumulating quickly Friday night.
"We don't have any pretreatment options that would be effective at this point, so we are just planning getting out there as early as possible tomorrow morning to start pushing,” Sangamon County Engineer Brian Davis said.
The city of Springfield has declared the storm a “snow emergency.”
Public Works will start plowing around crucial areas, such as hospitals, and plans to reach every city street within 24 hours.
