SPRINGFIELD, ILL---A group of college students from the University of Illinois Springfield worked to raise awareness and funding for the homeless.

The social justice class at UIS held a "Beat the Streets'" 5K run Saturday afternoon at Washington Park.

Students say when they heard the state budget crisis was impacting Helping Hands of Springfield, they decided to help.

The shelter has undergone a partial shutdown and staff layoffs.

"A lot of people don't know that there are over 300 homeless people here in Springfield and it's important to us at least to do something for our community. Something here and change lives in our city," UIS student Amanda Briick said.

Organizers say more than three thousand dollars was raised from today's event.
