Smithfield Foods and Schnucks teamed up Wednesday to donate more than 42,000 pounds of meat to the Central Illinois Foodbank.

The donation is part of Smithfield's "Helping Hungry Homes" Campaign.

42,000 pounds of meat translates to 170,000 servings.

The Central Illinois Foodbank Executive Director said there's always a need to help hungry families.

"What we know is we have people that are hungry 365 days a year. what we know is a lot of those are children and a lot of the people who don't know where their next meal is coming from are actually working and they're just not making enough to get those products," Director Pam Molitoris said.

The Central Illinois Foodbank said protein is the most expensive part of a meal, so meat donations are always appreciated.
