A six-car pile up turned into a fatal accident on I-70 near milepost 64 Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at 2:20 pm., approxiately one mile east of Vandalia.

Illinois State Police said a semi-truck was traveling west on I-70 where traffic stopped due to road construction. However, the semi reportedly failed to reduce speed to avoid an accident and struck a silver Ford Fusion, causing a chain reaction, involving six vehicles total.

The semi left the roadway and traveled down an embankment, where the trailer became engulfed in flames.

The entrapped semi driver, 42-year-old Robert Todoran, of Los Angeles, was pronounced deceased on scene by the Fayette County Coroner.

The crash is still under investigation by ISP's Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, the ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the Fayette County Coroner's Office and ISP District 12.

No charges have been issued as of yet.
