Roads continue to slip up drivers; 10 crashes in one morning

Troopers say they predict daily crashes until black ice melts completely. They say drivers are going too fast and traveling too close together to avoid wrecks.

Police said black ice is to blame after more than 10 vehicles crashed or slid off the road Tuesday morning.

Those crashes happened on both interstate 74 and 72. There were also crashes within Champaign city limits.

Illinois State Police are warning drivers about dangerous road conditions, asking drivers to slow down and leave plenty space between you and the car in front of you.

"The problem is a lot of people are traveling far too fast for these conditions right now,” ISP Trooper Tracy Lillard said. “The overpasses and bridges, in particular, are still icy in spots and until the sun can come out and get those dried off we're going to continue to have problems."

If you do slide off the road, Troopers say you should call 911 and stay in your car. They warn against getting out and walking, saying that can be deadly.
