Residents urged to be mindful of what they throw away to prevent garbage truck fires
Officials with Republic Services are warning customers to be cautious with what they throw in the trash because it could lead to fires in the garbage trucks.
When you throw away ashes from the fireplace, it can catch fire.
Officials said it's not extremely common but it can happen and it is a concern for the route truck drivers and the landfill.
"This time of year people are getting the fireplace going and will inadvertently dump ashes in their trash and get into the truck and get some oxygen and fire. Just make sure they put them out," Republic Services General Manager Daniel Winters said.
Officials said that the garbage truck drivers are trained on the proper procedure if there is a fire.
But, they said that the fire can cause exposure that they don't want to have.
