COWDEN, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — The Shelby County Dive and other officials are still working to recover the body of 35-year-old Wallace Otto Darko Jr. Wednesday.
Officials said they are still working to recover Darko from the log jam, which is similar to a natural dam.
The dive team confirmed they have Darko's location, but lost it when they went to remove part of the log jam. They have also been keeping Darko's family updated as the days continue to pass.
"In the beginning stages, there's always that hope that we'll find him and find him quickly and that there's a chance they may survive. As the days go on, the reality of it sets in," Shelby County Dive Team Commander Austin Pritchard said.
Crews are dismissing early Wednesday due to the holiday and many of the rescue team members are exhausted due to searching and high temperatures.
If Darko is not recovered Wednesday, crews will be back on scene at 8 a.m. Thursday.
