Pay It Forward: Tracy Day
Dozens of children file in at Riverton Elementary School all waiting for a hot meal.
"It's really nice because they come in and they're excited,” said Tracy Day, who works for the Riverton Elementary School Pre-K Department.
For the past four years, Day has dedicated her time to make sure kids in our area don't go hungry during the summer months.
"For a lot of these students coming in, this really is their most nutritious meal of the day,” said Day.
Through the Illinois Coalition of Community Services, they're able to pay cooks to prepare meals.
On any given day they'll have 30-45 kids.
Day tells us, "Not only are they getting a meal, they get a hug, they get to interact with some of their friends. And that makes me their summers a little more fun, too, instead of just saying at home."
Just before 11 a.m. School buses will pick the kids up all over the district during the week and bring them here.
To the kids, it's more than just about the food.
"It's heartwarming to see them, and I like hugging them as much as they like hugging me,” said Day.
Cheri Breneman, who nominated Tracy for our Pay It Forward Winner this month, said, "Tracy's a great human being. She's very giving, both to our neighborhood, her community, and her school. And she's got a great personality She loves these kids more than one probably knows.”
That's why we've chosen Tracy as this month's Pay It Forward winner.
On behalf of Hy-Vee, she wins a $500 gift card.
