Pay It Forward: Stan and Sheila Vacek
A Springfield couple who dedicates their free time volunteering is being recognized for their hard work.
As the crowd shuffles into the Kumler Food Pantry at United Methodist Church in Springfield, there's a familiar face waiting to greet each person at the door.
"They're a very close family,” said Stan Vacek.
Stan Vacek and his wife, Shelia, have been volunteering here for the past nine years.
"Helping them get to their table, just listening with them," said Sheila Vacek.
Their love for giving back goes back 37 years.
Stan says he began volunteering when he came home from serving in Vietnam.
"The first thing on my checklist was to volunteer,” said Stan Vacek.
It's a tradition they instilled in their sons and now their grandchildren.
"You just get caught up in their lives and you really want to know what's going on with them and how you can help," said Shelia Vacek.
From serving food to reading to simply being there to listen, these two spend several hours a week helping out.
"They’re just wonderful to organize this every week is just wonderful,” said Pat Kuster, who volunteers with them.
That's why Stan and Sheila are our January Pay It Forward winners.
On behalf of Hy-Vee and NewsChannel 20, the Vacek’s receive a $500 gift card to Hy-Vee to help them pay it forward.
