New trial date for man accused of kidnapping, killing scholar

The judge has set a new trial date for Brendt Christensen for April 2, 2019.

No word yet on if the judge recused himself.


Brendt Christensen, the man accused of kidnapping visiting Chinese scholar Yingying Zhang, had his latest court hearing Monday morning.

The hearing addressed Christensen's request to have the current judge step away from the case as well as a request for a trial to be pushed to June 2019.

Prosecutors want the trial in October of 2018. Christensen's attorney's have not said why they'd like Judge Colin Stirling Bruce to recuse himself.

Prosecutors accuse Christensen of torturing Yingying Zhang before killing her. Christensen does face the death penalty if convicted.
