More American Babies Being Born With Syphilis
Sexually transmitted diseases are at an all-time high, meaning new babies are also being born with the same diseases.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of syphilis among American women has increased to 27 percent from 2014 to 2015. That increase means more babies are being born with the disease.
It's called congenital syphilis and it can have serious health effects like rashes, an enlarged liver or spleen, brain and nerve problems, or deformed bones.
The CDC says the rise in syphilis is partially due to budget cuts in state and local STD programs.
