Women across America spent Tuesday rallying for National Equal Pay Day.

At Illinois' statehouse, they were bringing attention to the gender pay gap.

According to the American Association of University Women, women make $0.80 for every $1 men make.

The United State Constitution does not mention anything about equal pay for men and women, which is something they'd like to see changed.

"It's raising awareness to individuals because I think when you talk to people they do believe men and women are equal," League of Women Voters member Jenny Grochoswki said.

"The reality is that right now our laws and constitution don't always support equal pay and we are trying to change that."

36 states have voted for the United State's Constitution to be amended to guarantee equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex.

Illinois hasn't ratified that amendment, but there is currently a proposal being considered by the General Assembly.
