Local domestic violence survivor: 'It happens everywhere'
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Data shows that on average, 24 people are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner per minute. Over 12 million men and women are victims of domestic abuse over the course of just one year.
In Decatur Thursday night, a candle lighting ceremony mourned those who have died because of domestic violence and celebrated those who have survived.
A local survivor shared her story with us, saying that while people might think domestic violence is not happening in the local communities, it is. "It happens everywhere, everywhere," said Susan Wayne. "I was beaten up, I was choked, I was kicked, I was tossed around, but I was able to escape."
The ceremony was held by Dove Inc., a local social service agency in Decatur. Dove's Domestic Violence Program has served over 550 adults and over 100 children in the past year.
