Taylorville’s mayor said this cold weather might be impacting volunteer numbers, but there is still a good showing of support for the community that’s been ravaged by an EF-3 tornado.

Crews of volunteers have been working across town picking up debris.

Several organizations and private businesses have also stepped up to feed those out there working.

GameStop employees were out Tuesday night providing chicken wings to volunteers and the Illinois Pork Producers were out Wednesday distributing pork chop sandwiches.

Volunteers said they’re thankful for the gesture.

“It is cold here and it’s been that way all day,” Dean Otta, a volunteer from Decatur said. “Luckily, we’re getting a little bit of sun right now, but it’s not going to hurt volunteers from coming at all. There’s been a lot coming by every day now and through the weekend.”

Officials expect about 400 volunteers to turn out this weekend.

Mayor Bruce Barry is hopeful they can have most of this debris picked up by the end of the weekend.
