House a total loss after afternoon fire

The Decatur Fire Department responded to a house fire Thursday around 2:45 p.m. in the 900 block of W. Waggoner St.

Officials reported heavy fire coming from the front living room window.

Firefighters contained the fire to the living room. However, there was smoke and heat damage to majority of the house.

The house was determined a total loss, the value estimating $15,000.

No one was in the house at the time. However, there were two dogs inside during the fire.

One dog was rescued by a neighbor. It was struggling to breathe so, a firefighter used a pet oxygen mask and first aid to help the dog’s health improved.

The Second dog was found dead by firefighters.

The Red Cross is assisting the two occupants of the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
