Cheryllynn Williams named Sangamon co. chief deputy, 1st woman in the role

Sangamon County's Chief Deputy made history as the first woman to hold the post.

Sheriff Jack Campbell appointed Cheryllynn Williams as his second-in-command Monday, December 10th during a special ceremony.

Chief Deputy Williams has more than 20 years of experience, getting her start with the sheriff's office in 1996.

She has served many roles including sergeant, lieutenant, and captain.

"I am overwhelmed first female in a position like this. I can't even describe to you how I feel. It's just been coming and I feel like I've obtained a goal and I'm just overwhelmed with joy," Chief Deputy Cheryllynn Williams said.

The chief deputy's primary responsibility is to oversee day-to-day operations at the sheriff's office.

Chief Deputy Williams said she and Sheriff Campbell will be the 'dynamic duo'.
