Firefighter dies in house fire, family members survive
A small town in northern Illinois is mourning the loss of a 19-year-old firefighter who died in a fire in his own home on Friday.
Dozens came out to honor Gregory Wood who worked for the Leaf River Fire Department.
The fire broke out Friday morning.
Three people inside the home were able to get out, including Wood's parents.
When the blaze was put out firefighters found Wood's body on the second floor.
Coworkers say Wood had no limit when it came to helping others.
Leaf River Fire Chief Steve Shelton says Wood was a "very energetic young man, full of smiles, always had something good to say, very seldom did you find anything negative. He was.. he always brought a smile to everybody's face."
Samantha Shelton, another firefighter, describes Wood as "caring, compassion, all around just a wonderful person. Contagious smile. As we would say, always cheesin'."
The Wood's house was destroyed in the fire and two family members remain in the hospital.
The Leaf River Fire Department is making a memorial fund for the Woods.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
