East St. Louis couple arrested for Wal-Mart retail thefts in Charleston
An East St. Louis couple is facing charges for stealing over $3,200 of retail merchandise from area Wal-Marts.
The Charleston Police Department responded to the Charleston, Ill. Wal-Mart at 2:10 p.m., Friday, May 11 in reference to a retail theft, which resulted in the arrests of Charles Steward, 31 and Taneki Steward, 40.
Police temporarily seized the Stewards' vehicle and later conducted a search, which resulted in the recovery of over $1,500 in merchandise believed to belong to Wal-Marts in Mattoon and Vandalia, Ill.
The Stewards visited the Charleston Walmart March 15 and 21, loading items into their shopping cart and exiting the store without paying for the items. The stolen items were valued at $1,750 in total.
The couple was arrested and placed in the Coles County Jail for felony retail theft.
Taneki Steward is facing an additional charge of obstructing justice after providing a false name to officers when arrested.
