Change in diet could put diabetes in remission
A new study shows a healthy diet, could lead to a symptom-free life for some people with type 2 diabetes.
The Lancet Medical Journal studied almost 150 people with the illness over a period of six years.
They went through an intense liquid diet for three to five months.
After that, solid food was reintroduced and the patients ate a structured diet.
The researchers found 68 of the participants' diabetes went into remission.
"We always knew of patients that have lost weight by using lifestyle changes, by exercising, (their) diabetes control has gotten a lot better and some people have been able to stop medications and some people have been able to stop insulin but it doesn't mean they don't require it back,” said Dr. Chaitanya Mamillapalli, with Springfield Clinic Endocrinology.
Health professionals said if a person has been dealing with diabetes for an extended period they are less likely to put it in remission.
