27 tornadoes struck Illinois on December 1

A 30th tornado has now been confirmed to have struck Illinois on December 1. This latest confirmed tornado struck between Rochester and Mechanicsburg. It was an EF-1 with winds of up to 100 mph.


At least 29 tornadoes touched down in Illinois on Saturday, December 1, according to the National Weather Service.

This makes the outbreak the largest on record for December in Illinois.

The final number could grow due to crews continuing to survey sites to determine if the storm damage was caused by a tornado.

Illinois' previous December tornado record was 21 during an outbreak in 19-57.
