The Sangamon County Coroner has identified the two people who died after a two-vehicle crash in Springfield Tuesday.

Patrick Pletz, age 57, of Springfield was pronounced dead at St. John’s Hospital Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. He was the driver of a vehicle that veered into the oncoming lane on North Oaklane Road and hit another car.

Barbara Pope, age 76, of Springfield was a passenger in the car that was struck head on. She passed away at Memorial Medical Center in the emergency room Tuesday.

The preliminary autopsy results indicate both passed away from injuries sustained in the accident.

On November 13, 2018, at approximately 2:54 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a two vehicle accident, located approximately 200 North Oaklane Road. Upon arrival, it was determined the passenger of unit 2 suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The driver of unit 2 sustained injuries and was transported to St. John’s Hospital for treatment. The driver of unit 1 passed away later at the hospital.
It appeared unit 1 was southbound on North Oaklane Road, North of Mechanicsburg Blacktop, when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle veered into the northbound lane and struck unit 2 head-on.
The identity of the victims will be released by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
