19-Year-Old Homicide Victim Waiting to Pick Up a Baby When Shot
The Springfield Police Department says Alaysia Bennett was parked in the lot of the Georgetown apartment complex where she'd gone to pick up a three year old.
Once the child was in the car, a gunman unloaded six shots into the car and killing her.
As Adrienne Bennett sorted through cards and flowers given in memory of her daughter, she couldn't help but remember watching her daughter leave for what was supposed to be just a few minutes.
She was going with her boyfriend to pick up his sisters baby.
"I think that's what's hardest for me is she just drove with them to pick the baby up, and she was expecting to come right home and she never made it home," Adrienne Bennett said.
Bennett says her daughter was saving money working for memorial medical center to go to school to study criminal investigations.
"She was looking into different colleges, she just never made it that far."
The Springfield Police Department and Crimestoppers say they are extremely invested in this crime partly because of the potential for even more innocent people to be killed.
"We had a shooting with five people involved, and there was a three-year-old in that car, so Crimestoppers is very concerned about this incident."
They are still searching for the killer and need more tips from the public for an investigation still in its early stages.
"There were multiple people involved, and the detectives have to piece together a lot of information to reach the conclusion of who was the shooter, and what the motive may have been."
Adrienne Bennett has made a promise to the daughter she lost that her killer will be brought to justice.
"I love you and I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you. And we're going to find out who did this to you."
