Pay It Forward: Waldo Richie
On the winding streets of a westside subdivision in Springfield is a man that neighbor's call their "Guardian Angel."
"That's the way I feel,” Waldo Richie said. “I just want to help somebody.”
Waldo Richie has lived in this neighborhood with his wife for nearly 30 years.
In the winter, you can find him hard at work shoveling snow off these driveways and sidewalks.
"I said, ‘Waldo what are you doing out there?’ And he said, ‘well I want to make sure if you need to take your husband to the hospital in the middle of the night, you can get him there,’” said Vickie Matlock, who is one of his neighbors and also nominated him for Pay It Forward.
"I don't want anyone walking in the street,” Richie said.
At 74-years-old, Richie just keeps on going.
"I also mow grass for them, clean the gutters out for them, I wash houses," he said.
And he never asks for anything in return.
Vickie Matlock said, "The world needs more Waldos."
"Maybe someday I'll need some help,” Richie said.
That is why we've chosen Waldo as this month's Pay It Forward recipient.
"On behalf of Hy-Vee, we'd like to present you with this $500 gift card,” said a Hy-Vee spokesperson.
