Obama Administration Issues Guidance On Transgender Access To School Bathrooms
The Obama administration is setting new guidelines for public schools, saying they must allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with the gender they identified with and not the gender listed on their birth certificate.
Leaders at the Department of Education and Justice say public schools are obligated to treat their transgender students in a way that matches their gender identity.
This comes amid heated debate over transgender rights in schools and public life.
The Department of Justice and North Carolina sued one another on Monday, over a state law requiring people to use the bathroom corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate.
