Thousands Pack Downtown Before Annual Charity Run
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) —
Downtown is the place to be Friday and Saturday as thousands fill Seventh Street, celebrating Saturday's Fat A 5K.
It's all about having a great time for a good cause.
Friday and Saturday's street parties, along with the run, are expected to raise more than $150,000 for area charities.
Volunteers were hard at work Friday afternoon, setting up for the Fat A Craft Beer and Cigar Festival.
That's going on until midnight Friday on Seventh between Washington and Adams.
While it's all about having fun, and exercising for a good cause, organizer Paul Schafer says security is on high alert.
"Security is something that we take very seriously," Schafer said. "Anytime you have 4,000 people in one spot, you have to be cognizant of it. This is a very well behaved crowed. We have been very blessed that everyone who comes out here is in a mood to have fun and behave themselves."
It's not too late to register for Saturday's run.
You can Friday at the street party at Seventh and Washington.
The race kicks off at the Old State Capitol at 10 a.m.
Tickets include a meal at the end of the race.
