Teen kills cousin in accidental shooting inside a Will County church
WILMINGTON, Ill. (WICS) —
Police are calling a fatal shooting at a church in Will County a "tragic accident."
A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed at the residence inside the Christian Faith Center in Wilmington, by his cousin.
The Will County Sheriff says the victim was staying overnight with his 17-year-old cousin, the church pastor's son.
The 17-year-old has a valid firearms ID card.
Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley says "The 17-year-old had possession of the rifle and was heading towards the gymnasium area where the sound was coming from. The 17-year-old began to fall when the rifle accidentally discharged; striking his 15-year-old cousin. "
The gun accidentally discharged and he shot his cousin just under his armpit.
Family members and police performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The 17-year-old was questioned at the Will County Sheriff's Office.
He was not charged and released to the custody of his parents.
