The Springfield Police Department (SPD) is warning the public about a suspicious person reportedly attempting to lure women with children into a truck outside a local Walmart.

Police say they received a report of the suspicious person at a Springfield Walmart, 1100 LeJune Dr., just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. The suspect attempted to lure several females in the parking lot with their children. According to SPD, the suspect identified himself as a Walmart security employee each time and said there was a child predator in the area.

The suspect was driving an older model blue pickup truck which appears to be an older model of a Ford Ranger, blue with a black cover over the bed.
The suspect is described to be a white male in his mid to late 50s, approximately 5’11” – 6’00”, heavy-set and balding. He was last seen wearing a plaid button-up shirt and tan pants.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 217.788.8311 and/or Crime Stoppers at 217.788.8427.

“A predator can look like anybody,” said Walmart shopper Kara Slagle.

Springfield Walmart shoppers are on high alert.

Police say a man tried to lure women and children into his truck at this Walmart off of sixth street.

"it definitely makes me nervous because I know at some point that is something that can happen as having two children like I have," said Slagle

"I probably would have went inside and confirmed it with them instead of wondering around out here," said Walmart Angela Baker.

Walmart released this statement to us.

“We take the safety and security of everyone who visits our stores seriously. We'll assist local police in any way possible and must refer all other questions to them."

Parents are doing what they can to warn their children in case they come across a predator.

"Because there has been situations, where there was somebody in a white van in our neighborhood who was trying to bring kids in by luring them with candy. It scares them when I tell them that but it is the truth and it is what it is," said Slagle.

"I tell them even if somebody looks nice, but if a care looks nice to never get close to the car," she added.
