Emergency crews are on the scene of a train derailment in Elkhart.

Crews were called to the scene around 10:15 p.m. Monday, with five different fire departments responding.

Of the 77 car freight train, 18 cars are either derailed or off the tracks.

Union Pacific says the train originated in East St. Louis and was headed to Proviso, outside of Chicago.

The train had new vehicles on board, with two of its rail cars carrying some hazardous chemicals.

"These chemicals are in cars that are upright and do not appear leaking," Dan Fulscher, Logan County EMA & 911 Director said.

Nonresidents of Elkhart are asked to avoid the area while crews work to clean up the scene.
