Illinois Army Veteran Facing Deportation
CHICAGO (WICS) —
The legal battle rages on for an Illinois Army veteran who faces deportation.
Family and friends gathered in Chicago Sunday to show their support for veteran Miguel Perez.
A Chicago judge ruled last week that Perez must be deported back to Mexico.
He came to the U.S. at age 8.
A spokesperson within the office of U.S. immigration and customs enforcement says Perez was targeted for removal only after being convicted of a felony, for selling drugs, after he left the army in 2010.
"My son fought for this country, not for Mexico," Miguel's mother, Esperanza Medina, said.
For years this family has been fighting back against his deportation decision, saying if Perez returns to Mexico his life could be in danger.
