Arrest Made in Attempted Walmart Purse Snatching

Springfield police have arrested one woman in connection with an attempted purse snatching in the parking lot of a local Walmart.

Police arrested Jessica N. Spencer, 26, around 9 a.m. Tuesday for attempted robbery and aggravated battery.

Spencer is accused of trying to take a 52-year-old woman’s purse and dragging her in the Walmart parking lot, 2760 N. Dirksen Parkway.

The victim went after Spencer allegedly took her purse from her shopping cart, while loading groceries into her car.

Police say Spencer then jumped into a moving vehicle with the victim’s purse as did the victim. The victim and Spencer got into a physical struggle over possession of the purse. Spencer at some point lost possession of the purse and pushed the victim out of the moving truck while fleeing the parking lot.

The victim did get her purse back and sustained minor injuries from the impact with the pavement, which required medical treatment for road rash, cuts and bruising. Spencer was taken to the Sangamon County Jail.
