Committee in Action Illinois renews push for Welcoming City

Action Illinois renews push for Welcoming City

A committee within "Action Illinois," said it's renewing the push for Springfield to become a Welcoming City after city council voted to table the original resolution.

A Welcoming City is not to be confused with a sanctuary city, as there are no legalities involved.

One leader, Meg Evans, said the council's vote hurt their momentum, but will not stop them from pursuing the title.

Now, there are more advocates, including various local churches, coming forward.

"So disappointed,” said Evans. “With the tabling of the resolution for Springfield and you know it's important to me personally to recognize the talent, the leadership and the entrepreneurship that immigrants bring to our community."

People against the resolution said the city should focus on helping the homeless instead of immigrants and refugees.

The Welcoming City committee hopes to bring this ordinance back up, next year.
